玛丽·斯汀伯根，1953年生于阿肯色州，美国演员。1978年杰克·尼科尔森执导并主演的影片《到南方去》里担任角色，从此步入影坛。
从小酷爱表演，在中学、大学期间经常参加戏剧演出。二十岁那年，她来到了纽约，一边当女招待，一边学演技。后来进入著名的奈伯霍德剧院习艺，同时在外百老汇的一些剧院里从事演出。
玛丽·斯汀伯根演艺经历1978年，应著名影星杰克·尼科尔森之邀，在他执导并主演的影片《到南方去》里担任角色，从此步入影坛。1979年主演了影片《两世奇人》。该片描写十九世纪的摧花手杰克乘坐时光机器逃到了二十世纪的旧金山，而发明此机器的科幻小说家威尔斯遂追踪而至，一边在茫茫人海中寻找杰克，一边跟银行女职员发生隔代之恋，最后杰克以杀死其女友作为威协。斯廷伯根饰女职员一角十分成功，特别是当她看到未来的报纸而预知杰克杀人阴谋这压轴高潮演得极其紧张曲折。
1980年，这位新秀和上述一片的男主演、英国著名影星马尔柯姆·麦克道威尔结婚。同年，她应名导演乔纳森·丹姆之邀，参加了《梅尔文与霍华德》(Melvin and Howard)一片的拍摄。这是一部具有讽刺意味的怪诞剧，故事讲一个叫梅尔文的赌棍和百万富翁霍华德赌钱，梅尔文老是输，连自己的老婆也抵押进去，但那个富翁最后却按照摩门教徒的旨意，把自己的一大笔钱约一百五十六万美元全送给了梅尔文。斯汀伯根就扮演这个不幸的老婆，她同梅尔文结婚离婚了两次，由于出色的表演，斯汀伯根荣获奥斯卡奖最佳女配角。
之后，这位奖主还演拍了《拉格泰姆舞曲》、《夏夜》等。
出演的女同喜剧电影《最幸福的季节》，将于2020年11月25日上线Hulu。
